Steps to add and subtract like fractions
Like fractions are fractions that have the same denominators.
Adding/subtracting these fractions are very similar to adding/subtracting whole numbers.
Just add/subtract the numerators together, and leave the denominators the same.
Then, check to see if you can simplify your answer.
Example
ADDITION
Step 1
Add 1/4 + 1/4

2/4
Step 2: Can I simplify my answer?
1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4
click for answer
2/4 can be simplified because both
numbers can be divided by 2
2 divided by 2 = 1
4 divided by 2 = 2
My simplified fraction is 1/2.
SUBTRACTION

1. 3/5 + 1/5
click for answer
Answer: 4/5, no simplification
2. 3/4 + 1/4
click for answer
Answer: 4/4, needs simplification
This can be looked at in two ways:
In 4/4, both numbers can be divided by 4.
4 divided by 4 = 1
4 divided by 4 = 1
Therefore the answer is 1/1 = 1
If the numerator and denominator
are both the same, the answer
is always 1.
Using Tiles
3/4 is gold and 1/4 is blue,
added together equals 4/4.
